Part of any house element like a sliding door is to depreciate its quality over time. It’s a principle that materials need to suffer as part of their natural character as house assets. If these inevitable factors occur, you have to know how to deal with them.
Thus, some common sliding door issues may need a repair solution.
When sliding doors get older, they often begin to stick and jam. Fortunately, there are occasional straightforward techniques to get your doors sliding smoothly again.
Sliding doors don’t slide but roll on plastic or metal wheels along a track on the footing. Vacuuming the track will often fix the problem if you’re sliding door sticks or jams. But, for pebbles, sand, gravel, or small kids’ toys, you’d be shocked at what constructs up in those trails over time.
If there is still resistance to gliding smoothly, the rollers on the sliding door base are likely to be substituted. To replace the rollers, you’ll have to lift out the sliding glass door. That said, you’ll need someone strong and qualified to either help you or do the repairs or service for you.
Step 1: The rollers on the bottom of the door have to be lifted. This step is done by turning the adjusting screws at each end of the door in a clockwise movement. This technique is crucial to raising each wheel into the sliding unit.
Step 2: With a strong person to help you lift the door and swing the bottom over the lift of the track, fib the door securely on a couple of sawhorses.
Step 3: Once you extract the door, you will uncover that there are two sets of rollers to remove. One set in front and the other set in the back. You can see if the rollers are ragged. If they are challenging to turn or if you can stagger them from side to side.
Step 4: To get at the rollers, remove the screws controlling the bottom bar of the door in position. Although structures are buried, there is usually at least one screw in each bar. Once the screws are out, work the rubber gasket loose using a screwdriver and waggle the bar out from the glass.
Step 5: Remove the roller brackets. The roller should glide out quickly, but you may need to twitch them free. Unless you have a significant brand of sliding glass door unit that’s not too old, you may have a problem locating an actual alternate roller unit for your door. But, you can find kits with just the wheels that will accommodate most units.
Step 6: Construct the replacement wheel and axle from the substitute kit and slide them in reverse order to remove the aged wheel. Most roller units are kept together by the wheel height adjustment screw.
Step 7: With the new wheel in place, glide the bracket back into the bottom of the bar. Do the same with the rest of the roller unit. Slide the bar back into place, working the gasket back into the bar. Replace and tauten the screw that clamps the bottom bar to the rest of the door.
Step 8: With the help of your labour-hire, lift the door back into place. First, insert the top of the slider. And then pivoting the bottom of the slider over the lip of the bottom track and into position.
Note: After reverting the sliding door, set the rail that the rollers run on with graphite as lubricant and slide conductor.
